The Oregon Board of Rabbis mourns the passing of our esteemed colleague and beloved friend. Rabbi Aryeh Hirschfield who died on January 6, 2009. He was a passionate voice for Justice and Peace. A talented musician and a deeply spiritual individual, his contributions to the Portland Jewish community will be missed. Rabbi Aryeh’s influence as a teacher and musician extend far beyond our local area. His treasured music enriches Jewish life in communities around the world and will be an enduring living legacy
Reb Aryeh Hirschfield received rabbinical ordination from his beloved mentor Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi in 1985. That year he also helped to create Havurat Shir Hadash (Ashland, Oregon), which he served as spiritual leader until July 1996. In January 1993, he helped create P’nai Or of Portland (Oregon), which he continued to serve until his death. More information may be found at his website: http://www.rebaryeh.com/
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family in this difficult time.
May his memory be a blessing to all whose lives he touched, and may his holy Neshama find comfort and peace in the Presence of Hashem.
